Can A Photographer Shoot A Better Wedding Video?
A new trend has started! Recently some wedding photographers have been successfully trying their hand at wedding films!
Many professional SLR cameras including the Cannon 5d mark-ii now offer the ability to shoot full HD 1080i video, giving a photographer the kit to start trying out shooting high quality moving images. These cameras are so good at shooting video, many wedding videographers now use them as part of their kit! The ability to change lenses and the film like look has massive benefits at the relatively cheap price compared to professional video camcorders.
The trend of photographers moving to film was first started in the niche of asian wedding photography, where there has always been the need to be artistic as extra money is always spent on photography and video trying to achieve the best film or pictures in their family group ( healthy competition!)
So can a photographer shoot a wedding film?
Well with recent updates to the cameras firmware, more functions and formats are becoming available. Where as 3 months ago the video was restricted to 30 frames per second, now you can shoot 25 fps and for a longer period of time. At the moment their are still few companies shooting an entire wedding film of photographic cameras, but those who do are achieving some quite outstanding results! Often multiple cameras are used to cover all the angles and allow for changing lenses/ batteries/ mounting etc.
The skills needed to shoot video instead of capturing a still is obviously different as well. The shoot need to be continually in focus and the aperture controlled to perfect lighting conditions, however with the use of the auto focus options and the semi-automatic shooting modes you can achieve great results at minimum effort.
The art of being in the right place at the right time and knowing what is coming up to prepare for the next shoot is something that can only be learned with experience. However photographers who specialise in creative wedding photography already have an advantage of knowing how a wedding day pans out and what is needed to achieve a great looking shoot.
The worlds of photography and Video are merging
Once two separate arts, now the worlds of a photographers and a videographers are coming together. With the event of HD video a filmmaker can now capture some great reportage stills from a moving video. With the event of full HD video on still SLR cameras, photographers are also trying their hand at shooting film. One thing is for sure, they are still separate art forms requiring different skills and mindsets, however they are moving closer together with technology!
