Some Common Gold Coins Are Comparatively Less Valuable
Many of the coin designs made over the centuries have been dramatically different than what we commonly see today. There have been some exceptionally strange gold coin patterns made over history to say the least. Some of these are so impractical that they are kind of funny to look at. Trying to use them for everyday usage reveals just why the designs did not catch on and become more common place. One old 20 dollar gold coin I had for a while was rather strange but at the same time I could appreciate the workmanship which ultimately went into the making of this antique.
The overall popularity of a coin can actually be a less than desirable thing for collectors. The key reason for this is that if there are too many of the same example produced, it can keep the values too low for anyone to have much interest in them at all. This is also true of several of the rare coins, but the exact opposite in the fact that they are made from a less desirable material than what gold happens to be.
