Northern Gardeners Call February Pruning Month
For the northern gardener February calls for pruning task outdoors. Pruning a young apple, pear, cherry and plum trees should be done rather sparingly. Remove crossing interior branches only and cut back any leading shoots by one-third or half their length if they appear to be too vigorous. Overpruning young trees delays bearing. Since peaches fruit differently from the rest, they can be pruned more severely, depending upon the age of the tree, of course. Old apple trees may need considerable pruning; however, unless there is a good reason, do not remove heavy limbs. Keep the interiors open by removing crossing branches and those tending to grow straight up in the center. Cut back any vigorous branches to a side branch if they are getting too high.
In pruning grapes, remember the long brown canes of last year’s growth will bear the fruit. Cut these back to the fourth or fifth bud from the older shoot or arm. If the vine is none too vigorous, cut several of these arms to within 6 inches of where they come out of the main stem. These will sprout canes that will fruit the next year.
From the brambles – raspberries, blackberries, and the like – remove the canes which bore fruit last year, if this was not done immediately after fruiting. Do not, however, cut canes of everbearing raspberries which bore fruit in autumn. These are the canes which will also bear the summer crop; after fruiting they can be removed.
Remove the very old and woody canes of climbing and rambler roses. Retain the younger, greener canes for flowering. This is also a good time to clean out the overgrown tangled climbers growing on supports. Take them down and cut all hard and dead canes right to the ground. Hold on applying plant fertilizer just yet, although you may be tempted.
Any viburnum, lilac, mockorange, deutzia or other shrub which has made all top growth with very little foliage at the base is best cut to within 1 or 2 feet of the soil. There are no rules here; just reduce them. Do not prune young shrubs in this group as you would be removing potential flowers. This year’s flowers on the older shrubs are sacrificed in the interest of rejuvenation. Hydrangeas, except the blue and pink varieties, and roseof-Sharon. Old or young, can lie pruned at any time during winter or early spring.

Maintaining Beautiful Parks For The City Dwellers
We live in an apartment and thus do not have our own garden. I am very fond of greenery and so I have lots of plants which I have carefully maintained in pots. We have a local park that is maintained by our apartment’s Welfare Organization – you often see their temporary gazebos in the park when they’re doing some maintenance work. We are really fortunate, that it is well maintained and well kept. A part of the garden is marked as “Children’s Park” and that particular area has extra soft grass, bordered flowers and lots of swings for the children to enjoy and play without ruining the beauty of flowers. They have placed colourful benches at appropriate distance for the elderly to rest, while they take their morning and evening walks. They have decorated the park with fountains and a small man-made pond. This adds to the beauty of the park. When we see that such effort is taken to make such a beautiful park for us, we also do our level best to keep it clean and green for ourselves.
