A Beginning 5 X 5 Workout

In the fitness world, Bill Starr is known as a guy who can get people strong. (This is probably why he spent years as head strength coach for Johns Hopkins University.) His no nonsense muscle building approach has gotten a ton of guys in shape and a lot stronger.

Starr was known for using 5 x 5, and actually had a few different variations on it he liked to use. One of these variations was just for those new to training.

You’d do three workouts per week, with just three exercises – power clean, squat, and bench press. You’d do 5 sets of 5 reps, adding weight each set.

Monday was the heavy day, building up to a 5RM. Wednesday would be your light day, and you’d plan it so that your top weight was only what you did on set #3 on Monday. Friday would be a medium day, and whatever weight you did on set #4 on Monday would be the heaviest weight used.

Can Women Learn How to Build Muscles?

There are several myths and fallacies regarding women and their learning how to build muscles.

One very common myth is that women are incapable of building muscles because they have less testosterone compared to men. Nothing could be further than the truth. In fact, some women who have undergone resistance training will soon discover that they have gained considerable muscle weight.

Although testosterone plays an important role in muscle development, genetics is a vital factor to consider when it comes to building muscle in women. This is especially true with regards to the body type that a woman has been born with.

For ectomorphs to build muscles, they will need to do greater strength and resistance training (through lifting heavier weights). Endomorphs tend to accumulate body fat, so they will need to add aerobic workouts to burn fat before they could see the results of muscle building regimens.
